Material Handling Glossary | Automated Guided Vehicles

WHAT IS AN AUTOMATED GUIDED VEHICLE?
An automated guided vehicle, or AGV for short, is a computer-controlled and wheel-based load carriers that travel along the floor of a facility without an on-board operator or driver. Their movement is directed by a combination of software and sensor-based guidance systems.
With labor accounting for 74% of a lift truck’s operating costs, AGV’s are used to replace manually operated material handling vehicles that may be repetitive. By freeing operators from repetitive, low-value tasks, AGV’s can create a more rewarding work environment, raising engagement and lowering turnover.
